Thanksgiving Dinner 2008

As an International Church, we decided to celebrate the American Thankgiving Dinner. The date is not recognised as a public holiday in Germany, but in this area of Germany Buß und Betag (Prayer and Repentance Day) is a public holiday and occurs in the latter part of November. So on Wednesday 19th November 2008 we invited everyone to come to the meeting room and bring some food to share with others. The food was either to be appropriate to Thanksgiving or a dish from their own land. Around 90 people came and everyone had a wonderful time and more than enough to eat. Praise God! Der bekannte christliche Author Oswald Chambers+ schrieb oft über die Notwendigkeit eines Christen das Recht an sich selber aufzugeben. Jesus sagte dies ursprünglich so: “Wenn jemand mir nachkommen will, so verleugne er sich selbst und nehme sein Kreuz auf sich täglich und folge mir nach.” (Luk 9:23) Und Paulus schreibt and die Korinther:: “Ich sterbe täglich!” (1 Kor 15:31b) Es ist notwendig für die, die Gott dienen auf bestimmte Rechte zu verzichten, wenn das Wahrnehmen dieser anderen Gläubigen schaden könnte. Jesus lebte so, und weil er ein gekreuzigtes Leben lebte konnte er auch den Kreuzestod sterben. Die folgenden Beispiele sind einige derer die Paulus an die Korinther schreibt und es lohnt sich den ganzen Brief und somit die anderen Beispiele zu lesen!

Wenn jemandem Unrecht getan worden ist und er sucht Schadensersatz durch das Gericht, schreibt Paulus: “Es ist ja überhaupt schon ein Schaden unter euch, dass ihr Prozesse miteinander führt. Warum lasst ihr euch nicht lieber Unrecht tun? Warum lasst ihr euch nicht lieber übervorteilen?” (1 Kor 6:7)

Auch gibt er ihnen die Anweisung, obwohl sie alle Speise essen können, zuvor die Auswirkungen auf ihre Mitchristen zu bedenken, “Wenn ihr aber auf solche Weise an den Brüdern sündigt und ihr schwaches Gewissen verletzt, so sündigt ihr gegen Christus. Darum, wenn eine Speise meinem Bruder ein Anstoß [zur Sünde] wird, so will ich lieber in Ewigkeit kein Fleisch essen, damit ich meinem Bruder keinen Anstoß [zur Sünde] gebe.” (1 Cor 8:12-13)
Wir mögen nicht dazu berufen sein einen Kreuzestod zu sterben, aber wir können und müssen ein gekreuzigtes Leben leben.

The well known Christian author, Oswald Chambers+, often wrote about the need for a Christian “to give up the rights to himself.” Jesus originally put it this way: “If anyone desires to come after Me, let him deny (him)self, and take up his cross daily, and follow Me. (Luke 9:23) And Paul writing to the Corinthians says: “… I die daily.” (1 Cor 15:31b) It is necessary for those that serve God to forego certain rights that they might have, when to do so would be damaging to other believers. Jesus lived this way and because He lived a crucified life, He was also able to die a crucified death. The following are some examples that Paul gives in Corinthians, but it is worth reading the whole letter to see the others!

When someone has been wronged and seeks recompense in the courts, Paul writes, “Now therefore, it is already an utter failure for you that you go to law against one another. Why do you not rather accept wrong? Why do you not rather let yourselves be cheated? (1 Cor 6:7)

And he counsels them, that though they can eat any food, they must consider the effect on their fellow Christians before doing so, “But when you thus sin against the brethren, and wound their weak conscience, you sin against Christ. Therefore, if food makes my brother stumble, I will never again eat meat, lest I make my brother stumble.” (1 Cor 8:12-13)

We may not be called to die a crucified death, but we can and must live a crucified life.
